What are the best luxury artificial flowers for living room decor?

Luxury real-touch artificial white orchids in a glass cylinder, styled for a living room

Of every room I dress, the living room is the one I think about longest. It's where you kick off your shoes, where friends gather with a glass of something, where the telly flickers on a wet Tuesday in November. Flowers in here get looked at more than anywhere else in the house. So they have to be good. Properly good.

I'm asked all the time which luxury artificial flowers work best in a living room. My honest answer? The ones chosen for the exact spot they'll live in. Below, I'll walk you through how I think about it, then share seven of my favourite pieces from the studio and where each one shines.

The short answer

For most living rooms I'd choose real-touch orchids for a console or side table, a long, low trough of orchids for the coffee table, full hydrangeas in glass for the mantelpiece and a faux olive tree to soften an empty corner. Always go for real-touch blooms, arranged with a designer's eye, and let your palette follow your cushions and throws.

What makes an artificial flower luxury?

Walk into any homeware shop and you'll find a bunch of faux roses for a tenner. Hold one up to the window and you'll see why. Shiny petals, one flat shade of pink, a stem that bends like a pipe cleaner. Within a year it has faded, gathered dust and is heading for the bin.

The flowers I work with are a different species altogether. Here's what I look for:

  • Real-touch petals. Soft and slightly cool in your fingers, with the tiny creases and shifts of colour you see on a fresh bloom.
  • Botanically correct stems. The right leaf in the right place, and the natural curve of an orchid arching towards the light.
  • Arranged with care. I design every piece in my studio, turning each stem until it sits exactly the way it would grow.
  • A convincing finish. Clear resin that reads as water in a glass vase, or moss and visible roots at the base of an orchid.

Get those four right and you have flowers that give Mother Nature a run for her money. If you'd like to see how I craft each arrangement, I've shared the whole process on my luxury artificial flowers page.

I call them unreal flowers. Because that's exactly what guests say when they finally realise.

Start with the spot, then choose the flower

Before you fall for a colour, stand in your living room and look at where the arrangement will actually sit. Every spot asks for something different.

Coffee table

Low and wide. Keep it under about 45cm so you can still see whoever is on the other sofa.

Mantelpiece

Height and fullness. A generous arrangement balances the weight of a mirror or artwork above.

Console or sideboard

Your statement moment. This is where a tall orchid or a sweeping arrangement earns its keep.

Side table

Slim, with a little height, so it never fights the lamp for space.

Empty corner

Go green. A faux tree fills a bare corner beautifully and makes the whole room feel finished.

Windowsill

Pretty, but keep flowers out of harsh direct sun so their colours stay rich.

It goes with everything, and it lifts darker walls in a way white sometimes can't. At 65cm tall it has the presence to hold its own beneath a mirror or a favourite painting.

How I'd style them

  1. Borrow your colours from the soft furnishings. Pick one shade from a cushion, a throw or a rug and let your flowers echo it. The room instantly feels pulled together.
  2. Play with height. A tall orchid on the console, something low on the coffee table and a tree in the corner creates a lovely rhythm as your eye moves around the room.
  3. Mind the scale. On a coffee table, an arrangement looks happiest at around a third of the table's length. Too small and it looks lost. Too big and it takes over.
  4. Let the vase do some of the work. Clear glass with resin water keeps things light and modern. Stone, metal and ceramic feel warmer and more traditional.
  5. Place them near a lamp. You use your living room most in the evening, so put your flowers where they'll catch a pool of warm light after dark.

Why artificial works so beautifully in a living room

Fresh flowers in a living room are glorious for about five days. Then comes the cloudy water, the petals dropped on the rug and the lily pollen on the sofa that never quite comes out.

Luxury artificial flowers skip all of that. No water rings on your coffee table. No pollen for curious cats, who really shouldn't go near real lilies. No weekly florist bill. Just the same beautiful arrangement, looking exactly as it did on the day it arrived, year after year.

Keeping them perfect takes seconds. Every few weeks, whisk away any dust with a soft make-up brush or a hairdryer on its cool setting, and keep them out of strong, direct sunlight so their colours stay rich.

Made for your room

Can't find the perfect fit?

Every living room is different, and sometimes the perfect arrangement doesn't exist yet. That's when I make it. Send me a photo of your space and your measurements, tell me the colours you love, and I'll design a piece around them.

Your questions, answered

What are the most realistic artificial flowers for a living room?

Real-touch orchids, hydrangeas, roses and peonies are the most convincing. Orchids are especially hard to tell apart from the real thing because their smooth, waxy petals are beautifully suited to real-touch materials. Whatever you choose, look for careful arranging and a natural finish such as resin water or moss. My close-up gallery answers a question I hear often: how realistic are faux flowers?

How tall should a coffee table flower arrangement be?

I keep coffee table arrangements under about 45cm tall so conversation flows across the room. Aim for a width of roughly a third of the table's length, and choose a low vase so the flowers sit close to the surface.

Do luxury artificial flowers fade?

Good quality real-touch flowers hold their colour for years. The one thing they don't love is strong, direct sunlight day after day, so place them where they get gentle light rather than a full southern glare.

How do I clean artificial flowers?

Every few weeks, whisk away dust with a soft make-up brush or a hairdryer on its cool setting. That's it. No water to change, no stems to trim.
